Global Transformations: Decarbonization and Geopoliticization

Beschreibung

Recent scholarship and, increasingly, political punditry have referred to the current moment in global history as being characterized by a set of overlapping crises, also known as ‘polycrisis’. Since climate change and international conflict assume central positions in this contemporary diagnosis, this seminar seeks to make sense of two related transformation processes: decarbonization and geopoliticization. Both terms have rather recent coinage, but point to some profound changes in (international and European) politics, economy and society. To examine these transformations from different vantage points, the seminar begins with attempts of concept specification before delving into recent book-length contributions to scholarly debate. In the latter part of the seminar, students will be tasked to introduce and critically engage one of the books, based on a self-organized in-class presentation and discussion. To facilitate this, the seminar entails a skill focus on reading and engaging academic books as well as writing a book review essay.
