Beschreibung
Universities and science have played a key role in modern democratic societies that prize knowledge production as a primary source of economic growth and social development. As such, national governments and supranational organizations (i.e. World Bank, OECD, EU) place a high value on science as seen in policies and discourses, ranging from innovation to diplomacy to development goals. The focus directed toward universities and science has resulted in a variety of societal actors and interests to become more interconnected, thus impacting how faculty teach and research, students learn and administrators govern. In this course we will examine the ‘traditional’ role of HEIs, and look at how various trends and events (e.g. populism/nationalism, internationalization, Covid-19) impact universities and science, as well as influence the future direction of higher education in democratic societies.
