Beschreibung

What are the defining features of the world economy? How should one grasp the power relations in the political constitution of global capitalism? What kind of conflict dynamics arise from it? And how are states, multinational corporations and everyday practices enmeshed in it? This seminar aims at exploring these questions by making participants familiar with current debates in International Political Economy (IPE). We begin with examining conceptual frames about power in the world economy, considering various traditions in IPE to capture structure and agency. We then move on to discuss selected themes to both apply the conceptual frames and explore fault lines at the intersection of conflict, development and contemporary capitalism. We employ presentations, group discussions, films and guest lectures to inquire into themes such as commodity extraction and trade, debt and finance, as well as environmental conflict and climate change. At the end of the seminar, participants will have gained profound knowledge on issues and actors in the global economy as well as the conflict dynamics that arise from them.
