Mixed methods became the "third methodological movement" (Tashakori and Teddlie, 2003) and publications in that field increased within the last years. Knowledge and experience with mixed methods research became a highly demanded skill for researchers in social sciences. But how does it work? And what are prospects, challenges and limitations in these approaches?

This class provides an overview of methodological foundation of mixed methods, different research designs and methods of combination. A focus will be put on migration and transnationalism studies, which are influenced by high interdisciplinarity and a strong tradition of methodological reflections (like "methodological nationalism" (Wimmer and Glick Schiller, 2002) or the "ethnic lens" (Glick Schiller et al., 2006)). Our readings cover theoretical, methodological but also empirical literature. During the semester, students will also have the opportunity to learn about classical and recent mixed methods research projects.
