Beschreibung

In this seminar we will get some insights in what is discussed in women and gender studies in non-Western parts of the world. We will read some important theoretical contributions and get acquainted with some debates and we will see how gender studies are embedded in broader women's movements. As most of the literature (with some exceptions) has not been published in German language, the participants need to be prepared to read English texts, further, knowledge of other languages is highly appreciated in order to report about texts and debates that have not been translated.

INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS

This course is the mandatory ‘Introduction to Gender Studies’ of "Zertifikat Geschlechterforschung". More information: https://www.fgf.uni-osnabrueck.de/zertifikat/zertifikat_geschlechterforschung.html
For most of the participants this is a 4 credit seminar. It is expected that you (a) actively attend the sessions as it is a seminar and not a lecture, (b) have read the preparatory literature, and (c) present and submit one “Studienleistung”, which will not be graded.
6 credits: You will either write in addition to the requirements for 4 credits an academic paper (10 pages, excluding references; please discuss the topic with the lecturer early enough, deadline for submission: Feb 28 via email and hard-copy) or arrange an oral exam (examination week: Feb 10-13, 30min, 2 topics, expectations: agree upon two topics with the lecturer, do your own additional literature search and readings, prepare a 2 page outline, submit it a week before the exam, similar workload as the paper).
2 credits: It is expected that you (a) actively attend the seminar sessions, (b) have read the preparatory literature, and (c) submit two 2-page papers (either critiques of texts or minutes of seminar sessions). Submission dates are 2 days before the session where the text is discussed or 2 week after the seminar session. Please send it via Email (Betreff: Gender: submission of…).

STUDIENLEISTUNGEN

There are two options (individually or with a partner):
1. You choose an author (feminist theorist), a country or a debate and prepare it for the other participants (short presentation with handout, ca. 10 minutes followed by a discussion). Please make up your mind and approach the lecturer to discuss it. A draft of the handout needs to be submitted to the lecturer at latest until Thur of the week before the presentation (be prepared to revise over the weekend). Please upload the handout to the respective Stud.IP file.
2. You choose one of the sessions and prepare some of the context in order to better understand the theory, the debate or theme of the session. Again, you prepare a short presentation and a handout. You’ll also act as a resource person throughout this session. A draft of the handout needs to be submitted to the lecturer at latest until Thur of the week before the presentation (be prepared to revise over the weekend). Please upload the handout to the respective Stud.IP file.
