Political violence – in its different guises – frequently makes headline news, from mass killings and armed conflicts over terrorist attacks and state repression to violent protests. In order to deal with these diverse forms of violence, we need to understand their fundamental causes, dynamics and logics. The seminar offers an introduction into key concepts, theories and findings of research on political violence as well as a discussion of specific forms and cases of political violence. What is political violence? How can we explain its emergence, escalation and endurance? How does political violence impact states, societies and individuals? And how can and should we deal with it? The first part of the seminar provides an introduction into key concepts and theories of political violence. Here, we will particularly highlight that different forms of political violence are always part of a broader repertoire of strategies that diverse actors can use to make and advance their political claims. Moreover, political violence is always embedded in broader political and social conflicts driven by contingent dynamics. On this basis, the second part of the seminar will take a closer look at specific forms of political violence (‘new wars’, ethnopolitical conflict, insurgency and indiscriminate violence against civilians, terrorism, violent protests, genocide, state repression) to see how the dynamics of political violence unfold in practice. This will also include more specific case studies in order to study the diversity of political violence and compare across cases. Finally, we will examine different ways of how political violence ends and consider lessons for possible ways to respond to and deal with it. At the end of the course, students should be able to understand central concepts, theories and cases of research on political violence and apply this knowledge in independent discussion and analysis.
