Beschreibung

Political violence – in its different guises – frequently makes headline news, from mass killings and civil wars over terrorist attacks and state repression to violent protests. In order to deal with these diverse forms of violence, we need a deeper understanding of their causes, dynamics and logics. The seminar offers an introduction into key concepts, theories and methods of research on political violence as well as a discussion of important empirical findings and specific cases. What is political violence? How can we explain its emergence, escalation and endurance? How does political violence impact states, societies and individuals? And how should we deal with it? The first part of the seminar provides an introduction into theoretical, methodological and normative questions regarding political violence. The second part of the seminar will look at different ways to explain the emergence of political violence through structural contexts, situational dynamics or relational processes. The third set of sessions deals with specific questions in the study of political violence, such as its organization, escalation and long-term effects. Finally, the fourth part will take a closer look at specific forms of political violence, including case studies of concrete episodes of violence. At the end of the course, students should be able to understand central concepts, theories and findings of research on political violence and to use this knowledge in independent discussion and analysis of concrete cases.
