Beschreibung

The seminar offers a critical approach to the analysis of the relationships between the military and the civilian political leadership under different types of political regimes, from a comparative perspective. In particular, emphasis is stressed on the processes and outcomes of the interactions that take place between the armed forces and the institutions and actors of the political system. On this basis, during the first part of the course the major theories and debates on the research of civil-military relations are reviewed, drawing from the theoretical contributions and explanatory models from sociology and political sciences.

The second part of the course deals with an empirical review of the civil-military relations in the light of selected case studies in different regions of the world, with emphasis on three scenarios: (democratic) civil control over the armed forces, military rule, and political transitional environments. In addition, the review of single emblematic country studies that provide a “unique insight” useful for understanding the diversity and complexity of civil-military relations across the world will be also addressed.
