Introduction to applied quantative methods in political science

Quantitative data analysis constitutes an essential tool in many fields of political science, ranging from International Relations to Comparative Politics. The aim of this seminar is to familiarize students with the basic logic of quantitative methods and how to apply them to practical problems of political science. The course includes practices with a data set from the field of comparative politics and offers a hands-on introduction into the use of the statistical program Stata. In the first part, we will learn how to handle and interpret data sets, including basic methods of univariate statistics and the visualization of data and variables. The second part will introduce into the analysis of relationships between two or multiple variables, including linear and logistic regression models. In the third part of the seminar, students will have the opportunity to present their own research design based on the dataset used in the seminar.
